The concept of self-driving cars is now being taken even further thanks to Waymo. As per reports, the self-driving vehicle company recently showed off footage of what it’s like to be a passenger in their driverless car. Thanks to this video, folks now have a glimpse into what it’s really like to ride in a car that requires no driver of its own.

Waymo Driverless Car is Safe Enough to Sleep In

As the video footage shows, Waymo’s driverless minivan took a test run in Phoenix, Arizona, where passengers experienced firsthand what’s it’s like to be in an operating vehicle with no driver behind the wheel. The passengers are all part of Waymo’s Early Rider program, where anyone can apply to test out Waymo’s self-driving vehicles.

It’s worth noting that, though the concept may be a bit unnerving for some — especially since the the sight of a car maneuvering itself with no one in the driver’s seat — passengers were at least reassured with the presence of a Waymo employee and a camera operator with them. Despite the additional riders, all rides — with videos supplemented by footage from what appears to be cameras installed in the vehicle — were completely self-driven.

While Waymo’s public trial of their self-driving car service is open to all, reports reveal that Waymo’s self-driving minivans will begin testing even further in multiple cities. Reportedly, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will supply Waymo with modified Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans for the self-driving car service. FCA will allegedly deliver these vehicles that are installed with Waymo’s self-driving hardware and software sometime in 2018.

Though the footage shows the test drive taking place in Arizona, Waymo has reportedly taken the concept to 25 other cities in the US as well. Other areas that Waymo is testing their driverless car in include Austin, Texas, Mountain View, California, and Kirkland, Washington.

Other Driverless Vehicles

Despite Waymo’s innovation in the self-driving car market, other developers continue to impress in the driverless vehicle scene. As previously reported, Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro smartphone showed off its capabilities by assisting the car’s navigation all on its own — without the need of anyone behind the steering wheel, at that.

With the use of the Mate 10 Pro’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the smartphone was able to navigate roads independently. Although the performance was impressive, Huawei insisted that it was not actually delving into the market of self-driving cars. The project was instead meant to showcase the capabilities of AI in this day and age, especially with the Mate 10 Pro.
